Dr Barry G Blundell is a physicist and engineer who is currently in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the Auckland University of Technology. For over twenty years he has carried out research into 3D display and interaction technologies. He is the inventor of several autostereoscopic (glasses-free) display systems including the Cathode Ray Sphere (CRS) volumetric system. This was the first volumetric technology to produce high quality, fully animated, multicolour images.

Current primary research activities include the development and application of innovative 3D systems. This work encompasses lenticular and parallax barrier based displays, the formation of 3D images in free space, and the creation of a table top 3D technology. His particular focus concerns the design and development of display technologies which seamlessly interface with, and capitalise on the capabilities of the human visual system, support innovative interaction modalities, and which significantly advance the visualisation process.

Further research interests include the formulation of metrics for display system characterisation, the history of mathematics, science and technology, sustainability in the production of digital systems, and the ethical application of digital technologies.

Barry has published fourteen research and teaching books, and is a Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Chartered Physicist, Chartered Engineer, and Chartered Information Technology Practitioner.

Current research includes the establishment of transdisciplinary collaborative activities in areas such as:

  1. The creation of 3D images within free (ethereal) space, including support for direct interaction techniques.
  2. The characterisation of 3D display technologies. This work is intended to make it possible to assess in advance the benefits that may be derived through the use of 3D systems.
  3. The development of two innovative volumetric 3D technologies.

At present working on three books, including "Echoes of the Third Reich: The Spectre of Omnipotence", which highlights ethical issues associated with the deployment and potential misuse of digital technologies, with particular emphasis on the ramifications of ever more complex systems.
